Starting Your Horse

The foundation is the most important aspect of any training methodology. How you start your horse will make all the difference in the world. Most folks simply put their young horse right into a specific discipline without taking the time to put all the "Basics of Natural Horsema
nship" into the animal first. Most people don't even know what these "basics" are.

Some of the basics that we start with are:
  • Flexion
  • Yielding the hindquarters
  • Yielding to pressure
  • The ability to move the horses feet in any direction at any time
  • Desensitizing/bombproofing
  • Ground work
  • Applying all the above in the saddle

A horse that is started properly is calm, confident, and willing to do what you ask. A properly started horse should be able to walk, trot and lope on a loose rein, stop, go right, go left and back up before he goes into ANY discipline. Also they should be able to stand tied, load into a trailer and be able to "hack out" alone and be safe! If you don't have these basics working you will have all the same problems everyone else has, or rather "symptoms". My fee for monthly training includes all the time you are able to spend with me. It is most important you learn the language of the horse.

These basics apply to ALL disciplines whether you ride English or western, practice dressage, jump, compete in rodeos or ride on the trail for pleasure. They will make your horse a much more willing and happy partner.
